Multiples Landscape Photography by Cynthia Lapp I grew up summering on Woman Lake near Hackensack, Minnesota, in cabins that have been in my family since 1918. Returning to the Northwoods after years living away, I felt connections within myself to this landscape through my family history that I didn't find in other places. I could feel the generations of my family in this ecosystem, along with the generations of trees, fish and birds. I visualized these generations as layers, and began photographing layers of landscape. The resulting images are constructed landscapes that reflect my inner imaging of the Northwoods. The Multiples are medium-format photographs created in the camera, using multiple exposures on a single negative. Each image comprises between two and four exposures. The first exposure uses more of the silver in the film and creates a stronger image; subsequent exposures become more ghost-like. The 2 1/4" square negative captures enough information to allow a unique interplay between layers, drawing the viewer deeper into the resulting landscapes. The photographs are printed in the darkroom on fiber-based paper, and selenium-toned to increase image longevity. I have photographed this body of work over the past five years.
